In our biorefinery, the grass is first ensiled and then purified in an apparatus similar to a washing machine. In a patented digestion process with multi-stage drying, we obtain robust cellulose fibres that we can process into various products. But the grass juice is also valuable because it contains nutrients – and a lot of energy.
After combining it with food waste we receive from other companies in the region, it is fermented by microorganisms that convert the input into biogas.
The biogas is processed and collected in a gas storage tank so that it can be converted into electricity and heat in one of our two combined heat and power plants (CHPs) as needed. The CHPs generate so much electricity that we can not only cover the needs of our biorefinery, but also produce a surplus that we feed into the public grid. We use the waste heat from the CHPs to warm our process water, dry the fibres and cover the heat demand of the biogas plant.
After fermentation, a digestate is left which still contains a lot of moisture. We concentrate it und deliver it under the name AgriFer to the farmers who supply us with grass. They spread the fertiliser on their meadows, thus closing the cycle.
